NETGEAR Receives Double Honors From CES Innovations 2005 Awards Program
Double 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router (WGU624) Honored in Home Data Networking Category and 54 Mbps Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router (WGR101) Recognized As Finalist In Wireless Communications Category
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – December 14, 2004 – NETGEAR®, Inc., (Nasdaq: NTGR) a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, today announced the receipt of two honoree designations in the prestigious International CES Innovations 2005 Design and Engineering Showcase.
Endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the program recognizes the newest consumer electronics products that exhibit excellence in design and engineering. Selected based upon a weighted criteria that included aesthetics, user value, contributions to the quality of life, and innovative design and qualities, NETGEAR’s Double 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router (WGU624) was honored in the Home Data Networking category. In the wireless communications category, NETGEAR also received an honoree designation for the 54 Mbps Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router (WGR101).
“NETGEAR’s dedication to leading the industry with the development of innovative, easy-to-use, feature-rich networking solutions for consumers and small- to medium-sized businesses is evident in the two products that have been recognized by the CES Innovations Award program,” explained Patrick Lo, CEO and Chairman of NETGEAR. “NETGEAR continues to drive the adoption of networking in the home and SMB through innovations such as networked home entertainment, voice-over-IP telephony and networked storage, and with wireless solutions that provide best-of-class range, speed and ease-of-use.”
Innovations Honoree – Double 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router (WGU624)
Designed to address the growing need to support multiple networked devices and applications in the digitally connected home, the Double 108 Wireless Router takes advantage of XR™ Extended Range technology, enabling it to offer up to three times the range of basic 802.11g routers.
The Double 108 Mbps Wireless Router simultaneously establishes two 108 Mbps wireless streams: a 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g stream and a 5 GHz 802.11a stream. By utilizing the 802.11a stream, users can perform bandwidth-intensive applications unimpeded and separated from the popular and often-crowded 802.11 b/g band, which may be hindered by interference from microwave ovens, cordless telephones and neighbors’ wireless setup. Since 802.11a provides 13 non-overlapping channels, which will increase to 24 channels in 2005 when new unlicensed channels become available, versus just three channels for 802.11b/g, users will no longer be forced to compete with their neighbors’ wireless networks for bandwidth. Users can continue to utilize the 802.11b/g band for lower-priority wireless applications such as e-mail, online gaming, file downloads, and Internet browsing and be completely compatible with existing wireless devices.
Innovations Honoree – 54 Mbps Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router (WGR101)
The 54 Mbps Wireless Travel Router (WGR101) is 802.11b/g compliant and delivers up to five times the data throughput speed and twice the range of 802.11b wireless products. Measuring a mere 0.7 x 2.3 x 3.4 inches, the pocket-sized WGR101 incorporates an internal antenna to eliminate concerns of breakage during packing and travel.
Though the WGR101 is small and compact, it packs a robust security feature set including both NAT routing and Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) forming a “double firewall,” VPN (IP-Sec and PPTP) pass-through, 64 or 128-bit WEP encryption, wireless SSID suppression, and is Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) upgradeable. A three-mode switch enables users to select between single-user and multi-user modes, simplifying configuration.
